A Little Back Story on Fall Festivals

Autumn festivals or harvest festivals have a rich and diverse history spanning thousands of years across various cultures. Believed to be deeply rooted in agrarian societies, festivals celebrating the harvest season (fall) are found in cultures such as those of the Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians. Festivals commonly celebrate the bounty of harvest time and are seen as a way for the community to come together and give thanks. 

Pagan celebrations, such as the Celtic festival of Samhain, honored ancestors and the harvest of food, and ultimately evolved into our modern holiday, Halloween. Asian societies also celebrated the harvest in mid-autumn, paying homage to the bountiful harvest and honoring their elders and ancestors. 

During American colonial times, indigenous people celebrated the harvest with European settlers and began the tradition of Thanksgiving, where a meal, games and gathering were the major themes. 

Today, fall festivals are celebrated for similar reasons and in similar ways, as we also incorporate freshly harvested food into many gatherings, including pumpkins, corn, apples, pies of many varieties and soups that utilize harvested veggies. Modern festivals also integrate activities that can be found on farms, such as pumpkin carving, hayrides, apple picking and more.
